Biographical
John W. Borg (judge, retired) has extensive judicial, practice, teaching and alternative dispute resolution experience. Presently, he practices exclusively in mediation, arbitration, special master, special litigation committee and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. He is a Qualified Neutral with the Minnesota Supreme Court, and has served as mediator, arbitrator, special master, special litigation committee (SLC) and trial judge in thousands of federal and state court cases since he began practicing law in 1975.
He has served as a Special Master and/or Settlement Master by appointment of the Court on cases in the United States District Court including the Baycol and Viagra MDLs and Thrivent and MSG class actions. He has served as Receiver/Interim CEO of a $90 million medical device company for over two and one half years as well as the receiver in other matters involving owner disputes in privately held companies.
Mr. Borg was a Judge of the Minnesota State District Court for the Fourth Judicial District (Minneapolis), a court of general jurisdiction, where he presided over all classifications and levels of civil and criminal matters. Civil cases included personal injury, contract, employment, restrictive covenants, product liability, real estate, commercial, consumer, business, family, tort, and construction. Criminal cases included homicide, assault, criminal sexual conduct, white-collar crime, and misdemeanor offenses. Mr. Borg has substantial and varied practice experience.
Mr. Borg held numerous positions for Medtronic, the world’s largest medical device company and a Fortune 300 multinational medical device corporation, as the Vice-President and Associate General Counsel, which included at various times: global responsibility for litigation, including patent and class actions; corporate law; regulatory; shareholder relations; compliance; employment; and Vice-President and Chief Senior Counsel for the Neurological and Cardiac Surgery business units legal team.
Mr. Borg was also a felony prosecutor and public defender for the State/Hennepin County and tried all types of criminal cases including homicide, assault, white collar crime, and sexual assault.

Mr. Borg received his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law in St.Paul, Minnesota.
Memberships & Affiliations
Mr. Borg is a former Master of the Inns of Court. He is a past or present member of the American, International and Minnesota Bar Associations. He is a past director of the Minnesota State Bar Association CLE Board of Directors. He is also a past member of the Minnesota Judges Association Board of Governors. Mr. Borg is also a founding member of the Academy of Court Appointed Masters (ACAM).
He is a recipient of the Medtronic Star of Excellence award (one of the company’s two highest employee awards), Outstanding Alumni Award from Bemidji State University, Alumni Certificate of Honor from the Minnesota Community College Board, and an Inductee of the Rochester Community College Alumni Hall of Fame. Named to the Lawdragon 500 Leading Judges in America, 2006. Named to The Best Lawyers in America, 2007 and 2008.
